The official trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which was released during Super Bowl LVI, revealed how surreal and mind-blowing the film will be.

The teaser begins with a monologue from Stephen Strange, who is plagued by the same dream every night after the events of No Way Home, and quickly delves into the film's strange and genre-bending elements.

We learn that there will be even more Doctor Strange variants in the film, that Wanda/Scarlet Witch will be the main villain, and that the Multiverse of Madness will incorporate elements from Fox's X-Men universe and Marvel's animated anthology TV show What If...? into the MCU.

Because of Evil Doctor Strange's appearance in the first teaser, we knew What If...? would play a role. And, while the X-Men had been rumoured to appear, the trailer confirms that Patrick Stewart's Professor X will be part of the ensemble cast.

There are more surprises and Easter eggs in the trailer, so check out our trailer breakdown article to learn more. Meanwhile, the first teaser for the film was released in late December:

Finally, you might have missed the film's official Super Bowl LVI TV spot, which includes snippets of new footage not seen in the main trailer. That video can be found here.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Cast

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has confirmed the following cast members.

Aside from the obvious return of Benedict Cumberbatch as the sorcerer supreme Doctor Strange, the big news from Comic-Con 2019 was the inclusion of Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch. Kevin Feige, the film's producer, revealed that her Disney+ streaming show WandaVision will be directly related to the plot of Doctor Strange 2.

Both Cumberbatch and Olsen appear to be playing multiple versions of their characters. Rachel McAdams will reprise her role as Strange's former partner Dr. Christine Palmer in the sequel, alongside Xochitl Gomez as the new inter-dimensional heroine America Chavez, according to the first trailer.

Wong, Strange's most trusted friend, and the new sorcerer supreme who helps protect the universe from magical threats will also return.

Wong also praised Raimi for bringing a different energy to the set, telling Collider: "I enjoy throwing alts, and he enjoys them as well, so we just have a good laugh. I just throw anything at the wall, and it sometimes falls down and sometimes sticks. The creative process is incredible."

"I believe he has an incredible mind, and I believe he is able to bring that mentality into his storytelling in a very unique way." And it's perfectly suited to the world created in Doctor Strange. "I'm excited to see what he does with that world and where he takes it," he added.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, who will reprise his role as the now-villainous Karl Mordo, recently expressed his excitement about working with legendary director Sam Raimi.

"I adore Sam Raimi, so I'm thrilled that he's making the film, the second Doctor Strange," he told RadioTimes.com and other outlets. "He just brings a wealth of imagination and passion to everything he does." Could Ejiofor be playing Mordo in multiple roles?

Finally, Michael Stuhlbarg, who played Strange's former colleague and professional rival, Dr. Nicodemus West, in Call Me By Your Name, will reprise his role.

Will West attend Palmer's wedding? Is he even planning to marry Palmer? Strange would probably shudder at the thought.

Vision (Paul Bettany), Pietro Maximoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), Tommy Maximoff (Jett Klyne), Billy Maximoff (Julian Hilliard), and Agatha Harkness are all rumoured to make surprise appearances (Kathryn Hahn).

Furthermore, a mysterious disembodied voice from the latest trailer (more on this below) was Sir Patrick Stewart, who is a surprise addition to the cast. As Strange stands in handcuffs, a British-accented voice says, "We should tell him the truth." Is Doctor Strange about to cross paths with Professor Charles Xavier from the X-Men movies?

The presence of Fox's X-Men characters in the MCU has yet to be confirmed, so fans will have to wait to find out who is behind the mysterious voice. However, if Xavier does appear here, it may be as part of Marvel's Illuminati, which opens the door for other new MCU characters and new variants of existing characters to appear.

Some believe they have spotted an existing heroine battling Wanda in the trailer, including a variant of Monica Rambeau (Teyonnah Parris) as Captain Marvel or her mother Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), while others have speculated that Tom Cruise will also appear.

Others have speculated that Hayley Atwell, who plays Captain Carter/Peggy Carter in the film, will appear as an Illuminati member.
